mom: What do I do now?
me: You don't have to do anything, but if you want to take a turn about the house for exercise, that would be great.
mom: all right. I'll do that.
[mom walks through the kitchen, dining room, front hall, living room, and back to the family room, remarking on the new stove, the new refrigerator, the presence of the dog, the wreath; says hello to Penny; arrives at the couch]
mom: Okay. So now I sit down?
me: If you like.
mom: I'll sit down.
[mom sits]
mom: What do I do now?
me: You don't have to do anything, but you can take a turn about the house if you like. It'd be good exercise.
mom: Oh. I'll do that.
[mom takes a slightly different route, commenting on the same landmarks]
mom: so now I go to the couch?
me: Sure, if you like!
[mom sits]
mom: What do I do now?
me: You don't have to do anything, but if you like, you can take a nice walk around the house for exercise.
mom: Okay. I'll do that.
[mom takes a chatty, observant walk around the house: there's snow, there's a wreath, there's a dog. Hello Penny! Returns to the couch.]
Mom: Should I sit on the couch?
me: You can, but I predict that the minute you do, you'll ask me what you are supposed to do, and I'll tell you to take a turn about the house.
mom: Well. I'll do that then.
Later:
Mom: Did we go back to twenty-five Pulaski Street?
Me: I think we did.
Mom: Who lives there?
Me: I don't know. I'll look it up. [beat] It doesn't look like a great neighborhood.
Mom: It's Brooklyn.
Me: But in Brooklyn. I guess it's ... I don't know what neighborhood you'd call this. But you don't live there anymore.
Mom: But my spirit resides there.
Me: Well, your spirit is fine.
[beat]
Mom: 25 Pulaski Street.
Me: Right. And where did you live in Sheepshead Bay?
Mom: I never lived in Sheepshead Bay.
Me: You did. 119 Langham Street.
Mom: That's Brooklyn.
Me: It's your neighborhood in Brooklyn.
Mom: Oh! [pause] Well, you can seee why I did so poorly in geography.
